A balcony I lived in at that moment didn’t have an ashtray. It was very windy, the one before blew off. There was a railing, I could mount an ashtray on it. The new ashtray must be a washable. I wanted to make a steel bowl, I didn't have the right tools so I switched to slip-casting. At first I’d make bowls with with a flat base, but they felt wrong, the vessel didn't need a base to stand on if its mounted. So I removed it. I needed to hold it somehow and I thought to bolt it down. Ceramics are not something you want to put pressure on especially not with steel hardware, it’d crack. It needed to be carried gently. So the bolt puts in an array a set of fingers
